President Mark Heckler is the chief executive officer of Valparaiso University and its principal spokesperson. The primary link between Valpo’s board of directors and the University community, he relies on a talented team of administrative and academic leaders to help manage day-to-day affairs and consult with him on strategic planning.

Academic Leaders

Subject to the authority of the President, the faculty has exclusive jurisdiction over matters of curriculum, degree standards, accreditation, certification, professional programs, and academic graduation requirements. Reporting to Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Mark L. Biermann, Ph.D., these key officers oversee academic matters in consultation with the faculty.

Presidential Commission for an Inclusive Valparaiso Community (CIVC)

The Presidential Commission for an Inclusive Valparaiso Community (CIVC) is a commission that reports to the President of Valparaiso University. The commission is comprised of seven ex-officio members, two co-chairs (one faculty member, one staff member) and twenty commissioners (seven faculty, seven staff, and six students).



These committees, convened by President Heckler, advise him in important matters of management and policy and serve as representatives of the Valparaiso University community.

Budget Review Committee

This committee includes one member from each college or school of Valparaiso University and a representative of the library, as well as three members elected by the provost’s council; the provost and vice president for administration and finance serve as ex-officio members. The committee offers an academic perspective on the budget recommendations proposed by the president’s council as the president prepares his annual budget recommendations for the board of trustees.

Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee

This dedicated committee of volunteers works with the president to develop and organize a weeklong celebration of the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. The tribute to the civil-rights hero includes speakers, religious services, workshops, discussions, exhibitions, and a luncheon as well as a community-service project.
