International Applicants

International scholarships up to $6,000 are now available for spring, summer and fall 2019 entry terms. Complete your application checklist before the deadlines to qualify.

Applicants for whom English is a non-native language must demonstrate English proficiency regardless of English language studies, academic history, residence in the United States or an English-speaking country, or immigration status. English proficiency may be met with the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the Pearson Test of English (PTE).

  • 6.0 minimum IELTS with no more than two sub scores below 6.0.
  • 80 minimum TOEFL internet-based
    • TOEFL score must come directly from ETS to be considered valid for admission.
  • Certain programs require a higher IELTS or TOEFL score. Please see program page for details.
  • 56 minimum PTE
  • Completion of a recognized English second language (ESL) program
  • GRE is not required for most programs

Successful completion of English language proficiency:

Graduate and post baccalaureate applicants who received a baccalaureate degree or higher from Valparaiso University or a recognized college or university in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, Nigeria or Australia will not be required to submit English proficiency test scores.

Transfer applicants may be required to submit English proficiency test scores. The Graduate School maintains the right to require English proficiency testing when deemed necessary.

International Partnerships

Applicants from specific partnership institutions may complete and pass an admission interview with the Director of Graduate Admissions to meet our English language proficiency requirement.

Conditional Admission Application Procedures
Valparaiso University offers conditional admission to students who are academically eligible for admission, but do not meet the English language proficiency requirement.

Applicants who wish to begin their studies with English language training may first attend an approved English program such as Interlink or ELS. Students who successfully complete the program meet the English proficiency requirement for admission, and are not required to take the TOEFL, IELTS, or SAT examination.

To apply for conditional undergraduate admission, applicants need to do the following:

1. Complete the Graduate Application

2. Complete the INTERLINK or ELS Application

3. Submit transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.

Please note: Students offered conditional admission are issued the I-20 form from INTERLINK or ELS. Students must provide proof of financial support in order for the I-20 form to be issued.

Please submit official transcripts with both original and English translations of all university courses in which you have been enrolled.

  • Unofficial transcripts are accepted but official copies must be submitted prior to beginning classes.
  • The undergraduate transcript should indicate the degree earned.
  • Transcripts should be sent directly to our office by the Registrar of your undergraduate and/or graduate university or institute.
  • Do not send high school or secondary transcripts.

Valparaiso University is required by the United States Department of Homeland Security to determine that international applicants have sufficient financial resources to cover their expenses while in the USA. All non-immigrant applicants must complete:

1. The financial support form OR a letter of sponsorship from the person(s) assuming responsibility for all of applicant’s fees.

2. A sponsor’s original or official bank statement of sufficient funds or official scholarship notification letter from a governmental or private sponsoring agency.

Provide a scanned copy of both sides that clearly shows your full name and date of birth.

Your reflective essay should summarize:

  • Why you are interested in studying in the United States
  • Why you are applying to Valparaiso University
  • Your interest in the degree program
  • How this program impacts your current or future development

  • $50 for international applications

Important Note:


All applicants from Nigeria must submit official transcripts evaluated by World Education Services (WES) or a current National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) member. Applicants going through WES should request a Course-by-Course ICAP evaluation from WES. All final transcript evaluations must be mailed directly to the Graduate School from the credential evaluator. This requirement may be waived on a case-by-case basis.  Admitted students who work with WES or a current NACES member will be awarded a special scholarship to help offset the cost of the evaluation. The scholarship will be applied to their account upon starting classes.
